How to have a great dining experience?
It all starts with your orders.
Follow the simple guide to ordering and have a great dining experience.
1. Call the waitress only when you are 'READY'?
I always find myself standing next to the table trying to take orders for 'unready' customers. The customers will then desperately flips the menu, while the waitress stands there waiting for their orders. I get very annoyed because they are not ready, but doesn't allow me to go and come back later. Sometimes other customers who are really ready to order could not get any waitress because we a stuck with unready customers.
2. Remember your orders
Many times I had to sent the food back to the kitchen because the customers don't remember what they order. In the worst case, I got complained because the customer said that I missed out their order when what happens was that they told the other waitress that they did not order that item when the dish was served. I do understand that sometimes the name of the dish might be in French, Italian or any other foreign language that we are not familiar with. But most menus will have the item discription below the names of the dish. Remember what you order and you will not missed your meal. Another thing to note is that if you are dining out in a big group, try to stop your conversation and pay attention to the waitress when they served the food to your table. I sometimes have to say the name of the dish to a few different people in the group before somebody 'accept' it.
3. Be patient and understanding
There was once when I was taking order for a group of 10 customers. As I was taking order for the 5th customer, the 1st customer asked me for a glass of water. I nodded my head and then continued to take orders for the rest of the customers. When I reach the 9th customer, the 1st customer asked me, "Is my water coming?". How could I get the glass of water when I did not leave the table? Do you think that the waitresses have supernatural powers?
4. Inform the waitress if you need a special diet or allergies
The waitresses are only human, we are unable to 'read' your special needs. Not all restaurants can cater to special diets. For example, halah or vegetarian.
If you have allergies for a certain ingredient, let the waitress know. For example, if your are allergied to seafood, make sure you inform your waitress. Do not take it for granted that you ordered a meat dish and it will not contain seafood. For example, Vietnamese cuisines will normally use fish sauce (鱼露) for all dishes including meat dishes.
5. Place the order one by one
What we dislike most is when customers are all ordering at the same time, and not giving us time to write the orders. How could we listen to so many voices at one time? And in the end, we may missed out certain items and got complain for that. Place your order one by one. Be patient and wait for your turn. This way your order will not be missed.
If you follow the simple guide, placing order can be the way to a great dining experience.
